Biography

Castera Bazile was a Haitian painter born in 1923 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and died in 1966. He is considered one of the most important artists of the Port-au-Prince School and a major representative of Haitian Naïve painting.

His career, though short, profoundly influenced the development of modern Haitian art. Bazile discovered painting at a very young age and dedicated himself to his art despite lacking formal academic training.

Castera Bazile was a Haitian painter born in 1923 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and died in 1966. He is considered one of the most important artists of the Port-au-Prince School and a major representative of Haitian Naïve painting.

 

He is part of the group of artists who gravitate around the Centre d’Art de Port-au-Prince, founded in 1944 by DeWitt Peters, an American professor who played a pivotal role in promoting Haitian art. Style and Characteristics Castera Bazile’s style is distinguished by:

His work continues to inspire contemporary artists and constitutes an essential testament to Haiti’s artistic history.
